Designing and building your own car.
– May 16, 2011Posted in: General

I’ve been thinking about building my a car for years. Finally back in the States for (hopefully) a while and I’m watching your YouTube vids as we speak. Looks like a lot of fun (and work).
Thanks!
Scott

Hi Matt, Yeah i remember this, you should join the forums and post photos of all the steps and progress you have made. It looks great, keep up the good work and don’t give up.
Awesome, I was wondering if you remembered haha. I will totally join and post up pictures and vids of everything I have done! Might take me a while to finally do it because I am so busy, but when I have some extra time I will do it!! Thanks a bunch and I wont! I have been wanting to do this since I was 12 haha.
Here is a video of my basic design and the second half of the video has some pictures of what I kind of did to build the buck! Feel free to check it out till I can upload some on here!

Hey, tried to join but it wouldn’t let me? Said something about I needed an account activation email but I never got one? haha Please help!
Were you able to register? I checked and did not see any issues. The forum will send you an email to verify you, you have to click the link and then you can access the forum. Let me know if it still does not work or you don’t get the email. Make sure to check your spam.
No luck! When I click submit it says one of my responses below was not correct and so I have no idea what to do. haha
Hey Matt,
Sorry you can’t register… When you are on the registration screen at the bottom there is an image called PeopleSign this is a spam filter system. It will show you two images, the first one you match with a image below that is similar or same as the first one, just click on it. Then you do the same for image two, just click the image that closely matches below. Once you match both images correctly it will register you. It different than a lot of spam systems but it works good. There have been a few signups and posts on the site so I think everything is working.
Try it again, thanks.
PS. I tried to email you directly and it bounced back. make sure you are using a good email address.

I’d like to find out more about making a custom built car street legal and getting it registered. I’m in Calif, and we have pretty tight safety and emission requirements. I’m sure Neal has run into this, particularly since he’s intending to offer the Blade for sale, but what about a one-of-a-kind car.
If you are doing a one off design. I would base it off a chassis from a current model car. You can get with some kit car company in your state and ask what they do to register the cars. I am not sure what is required as in my case there is a lot more issues to deal with.
I also live in CA. I have looked through the California vehicle code and handbooks for this kind of stuff. None of it is very specific, most of it could be argued if you had a good enough lawyer. But to the point, the SEMA Action Network has been lobbying for CA to both begin and increase it’s specialty vehicle program. It offers licensing and registration for a set number of new, custom built vehicles each year. I forget the number, around 500 or more, but that is how many new cars (non oem) can be registered and licensed in that year. I know that if you have a car based on an existing car (same chassis, etc.) you have to do something to the effect of, and this is a very close paraphrase; attempt to meet the original emissions requirements for the original vehicle. It is all very vague. I know that if you were to build a new 69 Camaro from new parts, it would have to comply to the emissions rules for a 69 Camaro in 69. But since CA has established the glorious “1975 or earlier are exempt” clause for many parts of the code, things like this are much easier. For example, while it will be considered a 69 Camaro, the orignial equipment and emissions don’t actually matter, and it will be treated the same as any other 1975 or earlier car, in that they will just look the other way when you drop your un-catted LS9 into it.
Hope that helps a bit. To sum up, it can be done. I know that much for sure. I would ask around. I know some people that have Cobra kit cars that live in my area, and they got them registered with no big issues.
